Second Semester Grades

Midterm grades are out, kids, so let’s take a look at what professor Royce Webb though of our L.A. Lakers.

“A-”  Not bad.  Although, the minus is teacher code for “underachieving.”  You’d give a “B-“ to a smart kid who isn’t pushing himself, a “C +” to a dumb one who is trying real hard, and nothing less than an “A” to Adam Morrison out of the fear that he might become a danger to himself, and basketballs.

Now the Lakers just dropped one to the Raptors on the road in a game they had in their sights.  They must have been checking ESPN.com at halftime and got a little self important.

Or perhaps they only lost because there really is a difference between a solid “A” that the Raptors received, and the Lakers’ “A-.”  Or, Chris Bosh.  Whatever.

Finally, I give the grader a Dee-minus-minus with a sad face for actually spelling out the words ‘minus’ and ‘plus’ instead + and -.  Please see me after class, goober.

E-Traders

If you get a chance, check out ESPN’s “Trade Machine.”  Basically, you can see if those dream trades you keep working out in your head are actually feasible, or just the frustration and red-tap water-cooler water talking.

You also get to see the players’ salaries next to their names.  If only I had played my last year at Duke instead of taking the easy money as a sports writer….

Anyways, after you mess with the possibilities a bit, realizing that you cannot trade Ronny Turiaf for the model year 2000 Shaq, you’ll realize that the Lakers don’t have a lot of cap room, and this guy Lamar Odom is making a freaking killing!

I sure hope this Trade Machine helps to cut some of your dreams down at the knees like it did for me.

Matchup Mess in Mo-town

The Lakers stumbled again in Mo-Town, losing their eighth straight game at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Pistons were firing on all cylinders and led almost wire to wire in a game where newly-acquired Chris Webber showed more of his brilliant passing skills to the Pistons faithful in the stands.

The Lakers certainly were not firing on all cylinders.  In fact, Kobe didn’t pull the trigger until the first quarter was almost over.  Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said it best: “We have not played a good game on this floor in years.”

But why is that?  Jackson thinks it’s matchup problems, but perhaps it’s something else, considering the streak extends back to when the Lakers still had Shaq, the human matchup problem.

Check out StubHub.com for the Lakers tickets to the game when they return from their road trip, but keep pondering why the Lake Show just doesn’t show up to play up in Detroit.

What Can Brown Do for You?

After getting word that Kwame Brown will be out for probably more than a month, the Lakers will have to face the Pistons on Thursday.  Chris Webber, the newest addition to the Detroit lineup, will likely try to exploit the lack of depth down low.

Andrew Bynum and Ronny Turiaf will be shouldering the load of defensive match ups in the post.  But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll have to body-up on Webber.

The fact that Webber likes to keep around the perimeter and take jump shots isn’t likely to scare the Lakers, it’s his passing that will accomplish that.  In the Pistons’ clinic Tuesday night vs. the hapless Celtics, Webber showed his new team that he could dish to slashers and cutters like Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince.

How will Bynum and Turiaf keep Webber contained?  Check out StubHub.com for Lakers tickets to find out.

Never Fear, Kobe is Here

Just because Kobe Bryant is trying to give the ball up a little more often, doesn’t mean he has to give up taking over and winning games for the Lakers.  Or selling-out away games.

With the game coming down to the final stretch, Bryant grabbed the reigns of the Lakers offence and pulled sharply towards a win, scoring nine straight in the fourth quarter.

Although Kobe still has some unfriendly crowds when he tours around the country, Atlanta showed more than its fair share of southern hospitality to what Atlanta Coach Mike Woodson called “one of the best players who has played our game.”

Lakers fans can rest assured that Kobe is still the player he always was: selfish.  Of course, it’s just that selfishness that won the game for the Lakers Monday night.  Only a fool would want Kobe to lose the most underrated of attributes for a talent like Bryant.  All Kobe is trying to do is turn “selfish” into the beginning of a description that ends in “when he has to be.”

On An All-New The L.A….

Like a failing prime-time comedy-drama, the Lake Show with Kobe Bryant is trying to add new characters to spice things up a bit.  Kobe found out that the wrong way to revive something is to score a thousand points in a game, and make a spectacle out of nothing, ala the old “Jump the Shark” technique.  Jackie MacMullan seems to think the “New Kobe” is trying to pull his team up, rather than use them as a water ski ramp.

It seems to be working.  The Lakers are 30-19 as of their Monday win in Atlanta.

Kobe’s assists average has gone up a mere one per game, but others around him seem to think they’re getting a few of the punch lines and getting written in to more compelling storylines.

Just ask Greg Popovich: “He’s an intelligent player trying to help his team win.  He is trying to make that transition to the team player who makes everyone better. You know, the Michael thing.”
