ESPN’s Mark Stein believes that Kobe Bryant has been so angry amid rumors of conversations with Kevin Durant, all the elbowing controversies, “dirty player” talk and suspensions over the past few weeks that he has become a blind, raging-mad scoring machine, hell-bent on proving something through record-breaking, frustration-venting nightly point totals.
If this is so, and Kobe is lighting up the scoreboard and causing a stir in the sporting world about his game in order to take the media dogs off his less favorable storylines, then we have ourselves a well-planned and perfectly executed NBA conspiracy, one that goes much deeper than you, I, or Kobe Bryant could have previously thought.
Who would have immagined that pressing the right buttons on Kobe would get him just mad enough to start on his current scoring spree and end the Lakers’ tailspin? The NBA’s Stu Jackson, that’s who.
The Lakers were drowning. They’d lost 13 of their last 16, and were headed out of the playoffs. Worse than that, the NBA’s greatest talent was actually trying to play “team ball!”
How the hell is Stu Jackson supposed to keep selling Lakers tickets if the Lakers don’t make it to the postseason, or Kobe’s 24 jersey if he keeps giving the ball to those ordinary guys?
Wise ol’ Stu must have seen what everybody else had, but had the wherewithal to do something about it. All he had to do was shake up Kobe’s jar a bit and make him good and angry. Now Kobe is making headlines for the NBA through his talent, and the Lakers are headed to the playoffs. You’ll surely have to get your playoff tickets for Kobe’s games at StubHub.com, because they are going to be hotter than ever thanks to the NBA league office.
Diabolical. Genius.
The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Grizzlies last night 121-119 on the road in Memphis. The win ends the Lakers’ road losing streak, and extended Kobe Bryant’s scoring streak to 3 straight 50-plus games.
Of course, Kobe was happier that his points have been helping the Lakers get back on track before the playoffs begin. The Lakers now, officially, have a winning streak at 3 games.
Said Bryant, “It’s special because it’s coming off three straight wins. This is a stretch where we really need to make up some ground.”
Kobe scored 60 points in 45 minutes, going 20-37 from the field and sinking all but one of his 18 free throws. The streak puts Kobe in the same category as Michael Jordan, Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain, all of whom have gone three consecutive games scoring over 50 points.
