One thing that sports writers love to do in the days before a big game or a big series is to break down, player by player, the match ups that will play out in the “game-within-the-game” between two teams. This is most ineffective when done with the Super Bowl, and although I really don’t believe in the match ups theory all that much, I just can’t help myself. Here they are, the Lakers’ starting five versus the Suns’ staring five- first team to three player-vs-player wins gets the series prediction. Let’s get it on!
Point guard: Jordan Farmar vs. Steve Nash: There hasn’t been a match up this lopsided since the first Gulf War. Suns win!
Shooting guard: Kobe Bryant vs. Raja Bell: There hasn’t been a match up this lopsided since the second Gulf War… then again, there is a timetable of seven games. Lakers win!
Small forward: Luke Walton vs. James Jones: Jones seems to be the only weak spot on this Phoenix team, and here is a position that the Lakers might exploit. Lakers win!
Power forward: Lamar Odom vs. Shawn Marion: The numbers say Shawn, and lamar hasn’t been himself for most of this season. Suns win!
Center: Kwame Brown vs. Amare Stoudemire: There hasn’t been a match up this lopsided since the point guard match up. Suns Win!
So by the imperfect formula spelled out above, the suns should take this one. Of course, you can see it for yourself if you check out StubHub.com for some Los Angeles Lakers playoff tickets.
