Checking in with the Lakers in Hawaii; Training camp: so far, so good

Kobe Bryant, the Lakers guard and the league’s leading scorer last season, decided to stop in at training camp after refusing to comment and letting speculations run rampant about his commitment to the team for the 2007-08 season. In a story published Oct. 3 by the Honolulu Advertiser, Bryant expressed his loyalty to the Lakers and said he thinks the team needs to unite during the training camp and “Just play basketball, focus on executing and working hard and doing what we need to do.” Bryant also discussed the advantages and opportunities involved with working new team member Javaris Crittenton and returning veteran Derek Fisher, who is the only other current team member besides Bryant who was part of the Lakers’ three-year championship run from 2000-02, according to the Honolulu Advertiser. Fisher rejoined the Lakers this summer as a free agenr, “He’s a dead-eye, knockdown shoter,” Bryant said of Fisher. “More so than that, he understands the nuances of the offense. He understands spacing, he knows what I like to do and tha tsimplifies things a great deal.”

Coach Phil Jackson seemed pleased with the team’s lineup and said of the recent displeasure that Bryant had expressed with the team: “Those are situations that arise after you put six months of work in to try and et to a championsihp run and you don’t get that opportunity. Everybody is like, ‘HOw come I wasn’t invited to that dance?’ Kobe’s been to that dance four times. He’s experiencing a lot of furstration about not being there and I think that’s what you saw.” His plans for Bryant for the upcoming season include playing a more significant role as a combo point/shooting guard. The one thing I can do is take him and put him back on teh top of the floor again, rather than putting him down at the wing where he was really in isolation,” Jackson said. “PUt him in a sitaution where he can push the ball and also create for other guys down the floor.”

Lakers’ Kwame Brown faces new charges that ‘take the cake;’ what’s in store for Brown, Lakers?

NBA star and LA Lakers teammember Kwame Brown, 25, was arrested in Valdosta, Georgia, for disorderly conduct and interference of an officer after the car in which he was a passenger was pulled over and the driver - acquaintance Charles Edward Warren, 23 - was arrested for driving under the influence, license violation and for traveling down the wrong side of the road, according to a report published Monday, Oct. 1 in the Valdosta Daily Times. Run ins with the police are nothing new for the former Washington Wizards player who now is a center for the Lakers. In July 2006, Brown was acquitted of sexual assault charges, after a woman claimed the NBA star allegedly assaulted her after she admits that she participated in “some consensual activity” with Brown, according to a story published in July 2006 by the Associated Press. Then, in January of this year, the star was accused of stealing a man’s $190 birthday cake and then throwing the large 2′ by 2′ desert at him. This incident was a misunderstanding, according to Brown, who said he mistaked the cake for teammate Ronny Turiaf’s, who had been out with him that night in celebration of Turiaf’s birthday. Brown was acquitted of any charges and apologized to the birthday cake man by taking him out to dinner.

The facts surrounding Brown’s recent arrest, however, do not seem like they could be easily mistakable for what actually happened although no new information about the case has been published, except that Brown and driver Warren have both been released on bail from The Lowndes County Jail. No information has been released about what the charges mean for the player’s career as center for Lakers but because of an injury and recent surgery, Brown has for the time being has continued to be placed on the injured list. The Lakers, on their way to training camp Monday, Oct. 1 in Hawaii with Kobe Bryant in tow after weeks of specuation that the NBA MVP might not show, are a team that still have much potential for the season ahead but are still lookin to make some changes with team members’ positions and lineups. Jordan Farmar plans to ‘keep game tight’ during upcoming season with Lakers

Returning Lakers sophomore Jordan Farmar is stepping into the 2007-08 season with the attitude of a champion. After continuing work on his defensive skills and improving his shot to make it more efficient, the 6′2″, 180-pound guard said he is prepared to go into training camp and start taking in what his role will be this season, he said in an interview with NBA media. Farmar,  a former UCLA basketball star, had an impressive first professional basketball season, averaging 6.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game during playoffs, according to the Lakers’ official statistics on the team’s Web site. The guard has been waiting for the chance to play professional basketball since he was barely old enough to walk and he’s ready to make the sport his life, he said.
“This is my job and I have a certain window of opportunity to play professional basketball. So it’s pretty much an all year-round thing for me,” Farmar said. “I started playing basketball when I was 4 years old and my dad was a professional athlete, he played professional baseball, and I knew from the moment that I started playing basketball that this is what I wanted to do.”

The transition from college to professional basketball has been a big one but Farmar has risen to the challenge and seems to be coping well, he said, admitting that he is unsure of any specific plan Phil Jackson and the coaching staff might have for him yet, but is willing to take on anything they throw at him. “In college you’re the man, you have a lot of time to go out there and do what you do, but here, in order to be on the court, you have to produce in a short amount of time. And that comes with efficiency, working hard and keeping your game tight, cutting out all the wasted motion.” His goals for the season are, “Just to come in and contribute, to help the organization any way I can, doing whatever the coaching staff and the front office want me to do. Just play my role.”
