It was a night fit for a prince and the LA Lakers - despite their Hollywood affiliation - were not pampered Thursday at The Palace in Detroit.
Instead, Lakers all-star Kobe Bryant received no end reward after his 39-point, ten-rebound game and the Lakes fell to the Pistons at the last minute when Detroit’s Tayshaun Prince saved the day with a 3-pointer with a little more than four seconds left on the clock in the fourth, propelling his team to a 90-89 win, according to a CBS 2-KCAL 9 article published Thursday, Jan. 31 on the official Topix.net Web site. Bryant, who had minimal help from teammates Derek Fisher with 15 points and Ronny Turiaf with 12 points, was hoping to finally beat the Pistons on the team’s home court - a feat the Lakers haven’t pulled off since 2002, according to the Topix.net report.
Starting out the team’s nine-game away-from-home tour, the Lakers’ loss at Detroit will set them back in spirits and in numbers - the fall was their fourth of the team’s last five games, according to CBS 2-KCAL 9.
“What are you going to do when guys are open?” Bryant asked after the game, in regards to hi If I catch the ball, what am I going to do, go one on three? We made the right play, we just didn’t complete it. I have to make smarter decisions with the basketball.”
Although disappointed with the team’s performance and saddened that the Lakers could not finagle a win, Bryant still has hope for the rest of the games away from LA, he said.
“It’s a tough loss because I felt like we had the game, but we made mental errors down the stretch,” Bryant said. “But I’m encouraged and if we keep playing hard like this on the trip, we’ll be all right.”
