Lakers win 93-86 in New Orleans to improve to 7-0, but Lakers coach Phil Jackson told the team, “You sucked the joy out of a good victory.” The Lakers had a 21-point lead early in the fourth quarter but the blowout stopped there and their lead dwindled down to three. Luckily the Lakers recovered in time to narrowly beat the New Orleans Hornets to remain the NBA’s only undefeated team. The collapse of the Lakers was prevented only by key defensive plays by Lamar Odom and Kobe Bryant’s late three-point shot. With a 51-30 halftime lead, it looked like the Lakers would emerge victorious without breaking a sweat, but the game proved more exciting than that.
Kobe Bryant reflected on the game to the L.A. Times saying, “We’re perfectionists. We want to make sure we do everything well. You look at it as a learning experience this early in the season.” Although the Lakers remain undefeated, their current trend of making it up in the fourth quarter didn’t impress Phil Jackson, who quipped sarcastically, “If at the end of the season it’s like this, then it would mean a lot, wouldn’t it?”
