Lakers Have Some Competition

The Lakers are the favorite in the West, that much is for sure, but will they receive any genuine competition for the right to represent the conference in the NBA Finals?  The Lake Show ran away with the number one seeding in the West last season, finishing 11 games ahead of Denver, San Antonio and Portland.  They then essentially cruised to the NBA Finals, save a bit of competition from the Denver Nuggets early in the conference finals.  If the Lakers get a fully healthy Andrew Bynum playing his best for 82 games, then the number one seed will probably be relatively easy to capture, but there is one team that could give L.A. a run for their money.

Just when it looked like the Spurs were getting old and fading away, San Antonio put together one of the more impressive offseasons in recent history.  Not only did they acquire forward Richard Jefferson for 10 cents on the dollar, they lured Antonio McDyess from Detroit via free agency and might have gotten the steal of the 2009 draft in Pittsburgh product DeJuan Blair.  Injuries and age will still be a concern for Tim Duncan and Co., but they could give the Lakers a run for top honors in the West.  The Lakers look like the best bet to rep the West in the Finals, but the road may be a bit bumpier this season than last.
