Yesterday (September 14) Lakers star Pau Gasol led world champion Spain over Lithuania, 84-70, scoring 19 points with eight rebounds. Held at Lodz, Poland, it was the second round of the European basketball championship. At the start of the second quarter Spain was trailing 24-15 but guard Rudy Fernandez (of the Portland Trail Blazers) made a crucial three-pointer that led to a 25-3 run for the next seven minutes, putting Spain ahead, 40-27. Said Gasol, “We played with a very good rhythm today. We raised our level of intensity and were able to run and play our game. That’s more the game that we’ve been so successful with.”
After winning a silver medal at last year’s Beijing Olympics and the world title in 2006, Spain temporarily lost its touch, until last night, that is, losing its opening game to Serbia and also to Turkey in the first game of the second round. Next up, Spain faces Poland in the final second-round game and the team will likely make it to the quarterfinals.
